As the string angle increases, the portion of the string between your finger and the bridge has to cross a "wider expanse" of frets, and if it touches any of them.. deadness..

While I had the strings off, I oiled the fretboard and gave the guitar a good polish. Prior to the change there was maybe a slight hint of fretting out buzz on the most extreme bends. You can use a straight edge the length of 3 frets to try to rock back and forth on the 17th fret.
